East Africa Branch
Introduction
The East
Africa Branch is the largest branch within the Institute of
Chartered Shipbrokers with approximately 200 members from a wide
range of maritime-related disciplines. The branch has continued to
play a major role in the development of the ICS in all areas.
Branch activities are a mix of the educational and the social
and include seminars, annual dinners, golf tournaments, industry
open days, and a revision week for students in late March every
year. The Branch works closely with various stakeholders such as
the ports and maritime authorities, the chamber of commerce,
privately owned shipping companies and container freight stations
as well as various learning institutions including the primary
education providers.
The East Africa Branch primarily comprises Fellows, Members and
Retired Members working or living in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda,
Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Democratic Republic
of Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Djibouti but such is the
nature of the industry that many of its members are based
overseas.
In terms of the spread of disciplines represented in the branch,
having Kenya at its centre results in a pre-dominance of
port-related activities, such as agency, surveying broking and ship
operations although, legal, insurance and banking professionals are
still represented in membership.
