"Maritime Trade & the World Economy"
Presented by
Professor Theodore Papageorgiou, Professor of Economics, McGill University

The cost is $30.00 for ICS members, $35.00 for non-ICS members and $25.00 for Students & ICS Retirees.
Lunch and drinks will be served.
Prof Papageorgiou will present some of his recent research on dry bulk shipping markets. He will start by making observations of patterns in ship movement and ship contract data. He then builds a theoretical economic model that captures the behaviour of both shipowners and charterers. In doing so, he incorporates both the geographic interdependence within the entire global network of countries as well as the challenges in the ship-cargo matching process in determining trade costs and trade flows. The model is then applied to show the impact of various changes (improvements in ship efficiency, a slowdown in China's economy, the opening of the Northwest Passage, reduced search frictions) on world trade patterns.
