London and South East Branch Evening Lecture - J.I.M
By SASCHA PRISTROM Technical Officer, Subdivision for Marine Technology & Cargoes, Marine Safety Division, IMO.
IMO is in the process of carrying out a major revision of the regulations governing Life Saving Appliances contained Chapter of the Safety of Life at Sea Convention. The current regulations are almost without exception prescriptive regulations developed in response to the proven or perceived causes of previous incidents or accidents.
The Revision takes into account the Guidelines for developing IMO goal-based regulations, adopted by IMO for the development of Instruments using a risk-based approach.
The talk will illustrate the difference between prescriptive regulations and goal-based regulations and include a description of how an acceptable level of risk to seafarers in the operation of life-saving equipment is established.
The event is free to attend and no booking is required and will be held on Monday 7 October 2019 at 1730 for 1815 start onboard HQS Wellington.
