Membership by Dissertation
The Dissertation is an opportunity to display the depth of
knowledge and experience equivalent to the Institute's Professional
Qualifying Exams (PQE).
The Dissertation should be an original research project related
to international shipping, logistics and supply chain
management based on relevant literature and appropriate empirical
work. You are required to appraise current research, deploy
specialist techniques and critically appraise results to
advance knowledge by presenting findings in a
dissertation.

- Read the guidelines documents and research your topic. Consider
discussing your research topic with your employer where
relevant.
- Complete your proposal template
- Submit your Dissertation proposal and completed registration
form to the Head Office of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers
via emailing membership@ics.org.uk. A decision will be provided
within 90 days. Once this is approved, you will have six months to
submit the full Dissertation.
- Complete your Dissertation: you will have 180 days to complete
and submit the full Dissertation. It must not exceed a maximum of
15,000 words, excluding appendices, diagrams and a list of
references as appropriate.
- Your application will be assessed by a panel of up to three
experts and a decision will be made within three
months.
- You will attend two online interviews. The first interview is
the Defence session which concerns your
defence of the Dissertation, followed by a Q&A. This session
will last a maximum of two hours. The second interview is
the Oral Interview session which covers your
industry knowledge. This session will take about two hours.
- Upon completion of your interviews, your application will be
sent to Controlling Council for approval.
- Once approved, you will need to make payment of your
annual membership fee.
Once you have completed
these steps and been approved as a Member you will receive your
membership card and certificate and can start using the MICS
postnominals.
