Membership by dissertation (1)

The Dissertation is an opportunity to display the depth of knowledge and experience equivalent to the Institute's Professional Qualifying Exams (PQE).

The Dissertation should be an original research project related to international shipping, logistics and supply chain management based on relevant literature and appropriate empirical work. You are required to appraise current research, deploy specialist techniques and critically appraise results to advance knowledge by presenting findings in a dissertation.

Please read our guidelines before applying via the Membership by Dissertation route.
  1. Read the guidelines documents and research your topic. Consider discussing your research topic with your employer where relevant.

  2. Complete your proposal template

  3. Submit your Dissertation proposal and completed registration form to the Head Office of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers via emailing membership@ics.org.uk. A decision will be provided within 90 days. Once this is approved, you will have six months to submit the full Dissertation.

  4. Complete your Dissertation: you will have 180 days to complete and submit the full Dissertation. It must not exceed a maximum of 15,000 words, excluding appendices, diagrams and a list of references as appropriate.

  5. Your application will be assessed by a panel of up to three experts and a decision will be made within three months.

  6. You will attend two online interviews. The first interview is the Defence session which concerns your defence of the Dissertation, followed by a Q&A. This session will last a maximum of two hours. The second interview is the Oral Interview session which covers your industry knowledge. This session will take about two hours.

  7. Upon completion of your interviews, your application will be sent to Controlling Council for approval.

  8. Once approved, you will need to make payment of your annual membership fee.

Once you have completed these steps and been approved as a Member you will receive your membership card and certificate and can start using the MICS postnominals.
