The Ted Renshaw award presented to Capt Norman Lopez FICS

Posted on Thursday, July 4, 2024

It is with much pride that we inform you about the award presented to Capt Norman Lopez the Education Office for Australia and New Zealand branch, at the recent ICS prize giving in London.

As stated by Ms Julie Lithgow, the ICS Director, "There is a very special group of people who assist and support our 5,000 students across the globe each year, and this is the army of examiners, assessors and tutors who devote their time to maintaining the educational foundation of this Institute.

They say that every organisation is as good as the people working in it. This is even more true when these people are volunteers. Our membership is our strength.

There is an African proverb, which says: if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others. I don't have an Australian proverb, but we do have an Australian example that exemplifies enthusiasm and professionalism.

The Ted Renshaw award is presented to those tutors and examiners who embody the spirit and ethos of Ted's unstinting enthusiasm and positivity.  This year, we would like to present this to Norman Lopez - Norman has supported the Institute for many years within the Australia and New Zealand branch, as a Member, Fellow and recently as the branch Education Officer. His wisdom, patience and guidance is valued by all who have had the privilege to work or volunteer alongside him.

The Bristol Steamship Owners Association, for whom Ted was a past President have commissioned a decanter of Bristol Blue Glass for this award and I invite Nigel Fletcher the President of the Bristol Maritime Trade Association to present the award.

Congratulations Norman, this award is an acknowledgement of the enthusiasm and dedication you bring to the role of Education Officer!
