The 12th Annual Forum of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers-Greece Branch has taken place on Wednesday 7th December 2016 at Eugenides Foundation in Athens.
As always it was a well attended event that gave the local shipping community a great opportunity to come together - the Forum was well attended by over 400 shipping professionals from sectors of the industry.
The title of the traditional talk this year was : «Future Imperfect: Shipping's route out of crisis»; the welcome address was made by Natalia Margioli - Komninou FICS, Managing Director of the Institute Greece Branch and Hellenic Management Centre and Nicolas A. Tsavliris FICS, Chairman of the Institute Greece Branch of the Tsavliris Salvage Group.
Michael Taliotis FICS, International Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers made a special address to the event and honoured the branch with his presence once again.
This year the distinguished speakers were part of a Q&A session where they were called to answer questions related to the field of their practice. The eminent personalities that constituted the panel and gave their valuable views on current shipping issues were:
Kimon Angelopoulos, Managing Director, Dena Shipping & Commodities S.A.Stavroula Betsakou, Head of Tanker Research, Howe Robinson;
Mariella Bottiglieri Green, Managing Director& Chartering Manager Giuseppe Bottiglieri Shipping Company Spa;
Captain Andreas Georgiou MICS, Managing Director Grace Trading Corporation Inc;
Robin King, Head of Marketing, The Baltic Exchange Ltd;
Amalia Miliou-Theocharaki MICS, Chartering Manager, Teo Shipping Corporation Ltd;
Alexandros Ntovas, Director LLM International Shipping Law (Piraeus), CCLS, Queen Mary University of London;
Iraklis Prokopakis, Senior Vice President & COO, Danaos Corporation.
The panel moderator was Ilias Bissias, Director of Naftika Chronika.
Natalia Margioli - Komninou FICS thanked all of them for being always supportive and welcomed them at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. She mentioned that they are all remarkable personalities of the international shipping market, their achievements are outstanding, they are living examples for the new generations and are continuously providing young people with motivation and encouragement to chase their dreams and embrace the opportunities that the shipping industry offers.
Nicky Papadakis gave a short speech thanking the Institute for awarding him with the ICS Honorary Membership and mentioned that, the Institute plays a vital role for the next generation of shipping practitioners. The Institute qualifications give an added value to the young people to be productive, knowledgeable and effective professionals.
At the end of the Q&A session, there was impressively interactive discussion between the audience and the panel, proving the fact that the Institute Annual Forum is not only a meeting point of shipping professionals but a place of exchanging ideas and learn from each other.
Once again, the year's proceedings included the Awards Giving Ceremony for the students that excelled at the examinations in November 2015 and April 2016. Furthermore at the end of the forum there was a presentation of the newly elected Institute Honorary Members.
The Greek branch was recognised for the third time for being once again the largest examination centre in the world with the most students participating at the Institute Examinations. More than 500 shipping executives attended the Institute Professional Training Programmes and took the examinations. This year 9 candidates have distinguished in their exams and were awarded for their efforts and achievements.
The awarded candidates were:
Theoni Agiotafytaki, distinction in Ship Sale & Purchase examination;
Viktoria Vogiatzi Fassianou, Alpha Bulkers Shipmanagement, distinction in Shipping Business examination;
Aggeliki Hatzopoulou, distinction in Introduction to Shipping examination;
Petros Kefalonitis, Super Eco Tankers Management Inc., distinction in Introduction to Shipping examination;
Maria Skoufalou, Chartworld Shipping Corp., distinction in Shipping Finance examination;
Miltos Spiliopoulos, Pacific & Atlantic Shipmanagers Inc., distinction in Shipping Finance examination;
Stratos Zafiriades, NAFTOMAR Shipping & Trading S.A., distinction in Introduction to Shipping examination;
Also, two Greek students were distinguished internationally, achieving the highest marks worldwide:
Maria Ioanna Meletsi, from Sea Traders S.A. was awarded by Efthimios Mitropoulos, IMO Secretary-General Emeritus and Chairman, 'Maria Tsakos' Public Benefit Foundation for achieving the highest mark worldwide in Marine Insurance examination
Vasilios Patonis was awarded by the International Chairman of the Institute, Michalis Taliotis FICS, for gaining the highest mark worldwide in Shipping Law and in Ship Sale & Purchase examination, for his distinction in Legal Principles in Shipping Business and for gaining also the President's Prize for his overall performance in all seven InstituteExaminations. The President's Prize is the Institute's paramount award.
These two students and were also awarded during the Prize Giving Ceremony held in the Mansion House of London in October 2016 in the presence of Lord Mayor Jeffrey Evans.
