The Institute is delighted to support the inaugural Lloyd's List Tom Leander internship and extends our congratulations to Kuganiga Kuganeswaran.
Kuganiga Kuganeswaran, a second-year philosophy student at University College London, has won the prestigious Lloyd's List Tom Leander fellowship 2017.
The 19-year-old topped a field of over 140 applicants from across the UK and Europe. She will join the team of multi-award winning journalists for a prestigious three-month internship, starting on the news desk and working across all areas of maritime journalism.
Ms Kuganeswaran impressed a panel of judges with her natural confidence, curiosity and thirst for information.
The Lloyd's List Tom Leander internship is sponsored by leading international law firm Norton Rose Fulbright.
It has received the backing of the UK shipping industry, with companies and associations offering to host Ms Kuganeswaran including the UK Chamber of Shipping, Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Inmarsat and maritime charity Human Rights at Sea.
"We are thrilled to have Kuganiga join the team as our first ever Tom Leander fellow," Lloyd's List Europe editor-in-chief Helen Kelly said. "It is wonderful to be able to honour our friend and colleague Tom Leander in this way, and are hugely grateful to sponsors Norton Rose Fulbright, and all the supporting companies."
